The Land Layout

With the move complete and unpacking well underway, I need to learn the property layout. So, I begin most mornings by walking the perimeter and making mental notes of the many improvements to be made one day. Sometimes Melissa comes along. Sometimes Alex joins me (us) via. backpack. Pressed coffee always accompanies the walk!

Overall, everything outside is in excellent shape. Only minor neglect shows itself… an occasional overgrown patch of weeds, trees in need of trimming, and lawn sections requiring overseeding come the Fall season. Note: need to learn how to improve lawn quality (less weeds, more lush grass).

The land can be broken up into four sections. The west front yard and east front yard… both are on the north side of the property. The back yard and main woods are located on the south side of the property. Each partition comes with its own personality, energy, and ego.

Lawn makes up most of both front yards (west and east). It’s peppered with pine trees and timber of varying types. I’m still figuring out which wood is what. A tree identification book is in order. Any recommendations?

(Update: I now rely on Trees of Michigan Field Guide (Our Nature Field Guides)
and Michigan Trees, Revised and Updated: A Guide to the Trees of the Great Lakes Region (Amazon affiliate links) to help identify the trees on Six Michigan Acres).

Backyard, Near West Property Line

The back yard, defined by tree lines, a small creek, and an old fence, offers views of nature and sounds of serenity. Think open space surrounded by forest walls filled with singing birds.

Two gardens grow here, too. Also, a fire pit sits near the creek and east property line. And, bamboo patches pop up to provide area privacy and shelter. Yes, bamboo in Michigan.

Finally, the forest occupies the south side of the property. It’s full of tall trees, tons of dead wood, and a swamp. I can’t help thinking often, “I own a swamp.”  The “window tree” caught my eye on this walk. See it?

June offers ideal weather conditions in Michigan. Cool nights, warm days, fair weather… perfect conditions for plant, forest and wildlife abundance. All present themselves throughout the property. Walking among them melts stress and and simultaneously reveals how much work awaits.

For now though… after missing 19 summers in Michigan, I just enjoy it all, along with some great pressed coffee.
